NIMET Issues Three-Day Weather Alert, Cautions Airlines Operations

By Faridat Salifu

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has released a three-day weather forecast from Thursday to Saturday, predicting moderate to reduced visibility in various regions of the country.

This is expected to impact flight operations across the country, prompting NiMET to advise airline operators to exercise caution and urged the public to take necessary precautions.

Notably, this time of year is known for hazy and foggy weather due to the harmattan. Starting on Thursday, NIMET anticipates moderate Dust Haze with horizontal visibility of 2-5 km and localized visibility of less than or equal to 1000m in the Northern region.

Similar conditions, according to the agency, are expected in the North Central region, as well as over inland and coastal cities in the South during the forecast period.

Regarding potential impacts, NIMET advises the public to take necessary precautions as dust particles remain in suspension.

It said, “Individuals with Asthma and other respiratory issues are especially cautioned to be mindful of the current weather situations. Additionally, airline operators have been advised to obtain updated weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
