The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the country from Monday, August 4 to Wednesday, August 6, 2025, warning of potential flash floods in several regions.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday, August 3, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina states.
The northern region is expected to experience thunderstorms and moderate rains throughout the forecast period, with high flood risks in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi.
The central region will see light rains in the mornings across Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, followed by more widespread rainfall later in the day.
The southern region is expected to experience cloudy skies and light rains throughout, with areas such as Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, and Ogun affected in the mornings.
By evening, rainfall is forecast in most southern states, including Lagos, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom.
Flood risks are particularly high in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta states on Monday; Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom on Tuesday; and Bayelsa again on Wednesday.
NiMet has advised residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response systems and urged the public to avoid driving during heavy rainfall.
It also recommended warm clothing for vulnerable groups due to low nighttime temperatures and advised securing loose outdoor objects to prevent wind-related damage.
The agency emphasized the need for safety precautions such as unplugging electrical appliances
during storms and avoiding shelter under tall trees.
Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning.
