Exposed! Nigeria’s top brands contribute to plastic pollution epidemic

The Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADev Nigeria) has released its five-year Plastic Brand Audit Report, identifying major corporate contributors to plastic pollution in the country.
Unveiled at a media briefing in Lagos as part of the 2025 World Environment Day activities, the report revealed that over 11,000 pieces of plastic waste were collected across six Nigerian communities.
Food and beverage packaging—mainly PET bottles and sachet plastics—accounted for 99% of the audited waste.
Dr. Leslie Adogame, Executive Director of SRADev Nigeria, described the findings as alarming and said plastic pollution has escalated from an environmental concern to a full-blown public health crisis, citing links to cancer, hormonal disorders, and respiratory illnesses.
The report specifically named the following companies and brands as the top plastic polluters in Nigeria:
* Coca-Cola Company
* PepsiCo
* Rite Foods (Bigi)
* CWAY Group
* Mr. V Water
* Viju Industries
* La Casera Company
* Nirvana Table Water
* Adbuk (sachet water)
* Seaman’s Schnapps
“The top polluting companies must go beyond promises,” Adogame said.
“They must disclose their plastic footprint, reduce production, and redesign packaging for reuse.”
He praised the Lagos State Government’s planned ban on single-use plastics, scheduled for July 1, 2025, but called for an expanded scope that includes PET bottles, nylon bags, and water sachets—items currently under-regulated.
The report, conducted under the global *Break Free From Plastic* movement, aligns with global advocacy for a binding international treaty to end plastic pollution.
SRADev also urged the media to raise public awareness and hold corporations accountable for their environmental impact.
