The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down 25 facilities across Anambra, Enugu, Bayelsa, and Rivers States over multiple violations of environmental regulations.
In a statement signed by Nwamaka Ejiofor, Assistant Director (Press), on Thursday the agency said the enforcement action was part of its ongoing nationwide compliance drive and targeted companies in the pharmaceutical, construction, manufacturing, and logistics sectors.
The affected facilities were cited for offences including failure to conduct mandatory Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), non-submission of Environmental Audit Reports (EAR), and the absence of functional effluent treatment systems.
NESREA Director General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, urged companies to comply with environmental laws, warning that the agency would not relent in its enforcement responsibilities.
“This operation is part of our renewed effort to ensure industries across Nigeria adhere to environmental standards.
It is meant to serve as a deterrent to non-compliant operators and protect public health and the environment,” Barikor stated.
In Enugu State, facilities sealed include Rugal Pharmaceutical, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), Planet Project’s Holy Ghost and Garriki Central park terminals, Tanit Medical Engineering Ltd, and Mil House Energy Services Ltd.
In Anambra, affected facilities include Pinnatech Engi Asphalt Plant in Awkuzu, Hardis and Dromedas in Umunya, several bonded terminals in Nawfia and Amawbia, and Ikenga Shopping Mall in Nkpor.
In Bayelsa, NESREA sealed off sites operated by Azikel Dredging Company, Raycon & Co. Nig. Ltd, and Megastar Technical and Construction Company Limited. In Rivers State, Multi Plan Nigeria Limited at the Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout was also shut.
NESREA reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental compliance nationwide and urged facility operators to prioritise environmental management in their operations.
