Nigerian startup, Nimsy Agro Solar Concept, has won the inaugural Africa Energy Entrepreneurship Award, recognizing its innovative solar-powered irrigation systems that are transforming smallholder farming.
The award, launched by Octopus Energy and the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Africa Council, aims to spotlight pioneering clean energy solutions across the continent.
Selected from over 50 early-stage businesses from eight African countries, Nimsy stood out for helping more than 5,000 farmers switch from diesel to solar irrigation, reducing costs and improving agricultural productivity.
The company plans to expand its reach to 500,000 farmers by 2030, addressing food insecurity while creating jobs in rural areas.
“Winning this award is a huge validation of our mission,” said founder Onimisi Charles Atere.
“It opens doors for growth, including a nomination for the Earthshot Prize, and gives us tools to scale our innovations further.”
Two startups were named runners-up: PAM AI, which uses artificial intelligence to optimize mini-grid performance, and KAMIM Technologies, which builds solar-powered cooling systems to reduce food waste in underserved communities.
All winners received grant funding, expert mentorship, and field support to grow their operations and impact across Africa.
The clean energy sector in Africa is rapidly expanding, having already created over 320,000 jobs, with projections to generate three million more by 2030.
Entrepreneurship is playing a key role in boosting energy access through off-grid and renewable technologies.
Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation and a member of the SMI Africa Council, praised the innovation and ambition of applicants, calling the award a “valuable springboard” for clean energy entrepreneurs.
Dr. Hubert Danso, Co-Chair of the SMI Africa Council, said, “These innovators are leading Africa’s green industrial revolution,” adding, “Their success will shape a future of affordable, reliable, and clean energy not just for Africa, but the world.”
