Nigeria’s Shippers Council Urges Acceleration of Ondo Seaport
By Yemi Olakitan
Expressing concern over the current status of the Ondo Seaport project, Engr. Emmanuel Adewumi, President of the Ondo State Office of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to expedite work on the deep seaport.
Adewumi lamented a perceived neglect of the seaport project, urging the government to take swift action.
The Federal Executive Council granted approval for the seaport’s operating license last year, locating it in Olokola, Ilaje Local Government Area.
Speaking at an awareness seminar in Akure, Adewumi emphasized that the completion of the deep seaport would significantly enhance the state’s economic landscape, contributing to employment and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
He lauded the efforts of the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu in championing the establishment of the port.
While acknowledging the creation of a Department of Marine and Blue Economy in Ondo State, Adewumi stressed the need for proactive measures.
He urged the state to collaborate with the newly-established Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to ensure the prompt commencement of the project.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Funmilayo Akinola, responded to concerns, assuring that the Ondo Seaport was not abandoned.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting import and export businesses, citing ongoing work on the seaport and emphasizing initiatives to create a conducive business environment for trade activities in the state.
