Nigeria Unveils Low Emission Strategy to Combat Climate Change

Nigeria has marked a significant milestone in its nationally determined contribution (NDC) towards the net-zero target when it launched a Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy at the ongoing Conference of Parties 28 in Dubai.

Speaking at the launch event on Friday, December 1, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. Salisu Dahiru, represented by Ms. Halima Bwa-Bari, expressed Nigeria’s pride in launching the LT-LEDS to support sustainable development and a climate-resilient economy.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo who stood in for Minister of Environment, emphasized the importance of the LTS in Nigeria’s commitment to implement its net-zero pledge made at COP26 in Glasgow.

Mr. Keyamo, who reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to transitioning from a fossil fuel-dependent economy to a low-carbon future in line with global trends and the Paris Agreement, urged international development partners to assist in implementing the LT-LEDS.

The launch event held at the African Pavilion in the Blue Zone was moderated by Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, Director of the Centre for Climate Change and Development, and Dr. Eugene Itua, Executive Director of Natural Eco Capital.

In his remarks, Global Director of the NDC Partnership, Mr. Pablo Vieria, commended Nigeria’s bold step in developing the LTS, emphasizing that Nigeria is joining a distinguished group of countries leading the way in decarbonizing their economies.

Mr. Vieria pledged the NDC Partnership’s cooperation in aiding Nigeria’s adoption and implementation of the LT-LEDS.

The Head, Climate and Nature, at the French Development Agency (AFD), Ms. Mathide Bord-Laurans, congratulated Nigeria on the launch and also pledged the AFD’s support for investments geared towards the LT-LEDS implementation.

In a show of support, Mr. Richard Baron, Executive Director of the 2050 Pathways Platform, expressed joy in assisting Nigeria in the design of the LT-LEDS, highlighting the collaboration with a wide spectrum of stakeholders and the involvement of Nigerian academics in the modeling work.

Also commenting on the launched strategy, Desk Officer at the NCCC, Chioma Amudi, emphasized the need for finance, effective stakeholder engagement, and strong institutions

She emphasized the need for practical investment in the LT-LEDS, underscoring the importance of creating an LT-LEDS Implementation Plan and mobilizing capital from domestic and internal sources to ensure its translation into tangible projects.
