Nigeria Partners Mobile Power to Promote Sustainable Energy Access

By Faridat Salifu

Mobile Power, a leading provider of electric batteries for rural populations in Africa, recently took a proactive step towards sustainability with a newly established partnership focused on recycling efforts in Nigeria.

The company’s innovative approach aims to address the growing concern of electronic waste pollution, particularly in the off-grid electricity sector across Africa.

In collaboration with Hinckley E-waste Recycling Nigeria, Mobile Power will extend the lifespan of its used batteries, contributing to a more environmentally friendly operation.

By adhering to the regulations of the Basel Convention and partnering with Accurec, a reputable recycling company in Germany, Mobile Power is committed to responsibly managing its battery waste.

CEO Chris Longbottom expressed the company’s dedication to environmental preservation, emphasizing the importance of recycling batteries to combat pollution and conserve resources for future generations.

The strategic alliance with Hinckley marks a meaningful step towards creating a ‘closed loop’ system, integrating battery recycling seamlessly into Mobile Power’s service offerings.

Despite its recent inception in 2017 in England, Mobile Power boasts an impressive track record of facilitating 6 million battery swaps annually.

The company’s forward-looking vision includes a strategic partnership with CrossBoundary Access, a financial entity, to invest $10 million in electric battery leasing in Nigeria by 2023.

This strategic move targets the vast market potential in Nigeria, where significant opportunities for rural electrification still exist.

Through these initiatives, Mobile Power is not only addressing the pressing issue of electronic waste pollution but is also contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy access in underserved communities across Africa.
