Nigeria Partners GGDG on Carbon Pricing, Afforestation Initiatives

By Faridat Salifu
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, recently met with representatives from the Global Green Development Group (GGDG) to discuss potential collaboration on crucial environmental initiatives, including carbon pricing, trading, and afforestation under the Paris Agreement.
This meeting, disclosed on the Ministry of Environment’s official page on Thursday, highlights Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
The discussions centered on several projects, particularly the 560-hectare Bomu shoreline, where the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has successfully planted over 800,000 mangrove seedlings.
This initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, combat coastal erosion, and improve carbon sequestration through the restoration of vital ecosystems.
Abbas Lawal expressed appreciation for GGDG’s interest in partnering with Nigeria on these important environmental issues.
To facilitate this collaboration, he established a Technical Team comprising representatives from both the Ministry and GGDG, tasked with driving the implementation of agreed initiatives and ensuring alignment with national priorities.
Key departments within the Ministry, including Climate Change, the Great Green Wall initiative, and the Africa Climate Resilience Strategy for Agriculture and Livelihoods (ACReSAL), will work closely together to advance Nigeria’s green initiatives.
This collaborative approach aims to enhance the effectiveness of projects and promote a unified strategy for environmental management.
