The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has revealed that Nigeria would need $104 billion over the next 26 years to fulfill its net zero commitment by 2050.
Speaking at the launch of a sensitization campaign on improved cooking stoves in Abuja on Friday, Abdullahi emphasized the imperative for Nigeria to attract $4 billion annually by 2050 to eliminate carbon emissions.
Addressing the audience at Karudu Village, where women received Commission-improved cooking stoves designed to consume less firewood, Abdullahi highlighted the detrimental effects of traditional cook stoves on health and the environment.
The DG said based on their studies, about three billion households use very harmful cook stoves around the world thereby adding to the effects of climate change that the world is talking about.
He underscored the significance of transitioning to technologically advanced cook stoves to reduce carbon emissions and enhance efficiency.
Abdullahi stated, “This technology requires them to still use firewood but in less quantity, here they would need just one percent of the firewood that they were using before and the time they would use in the cooking would reduce drastically, so it is a more efficient and safer way of cooking.”
He further outlined plans to expand the initiative nationwide, emphasizing the importance of promoting clean and renewable energy solutions for domestic cooking to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.
