Nigeria launches new climate resilience initiative as threats intensify

By Abdullahi Lukman

A new community-based project aimed at bolstering climate resilience across Nigeria was launched on Monday, February 24, 2025, by the Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team (NEST).

The “Scaling-Up Climate Resilience and Natural Solutions in Communities through Practice, Strengthening Inclusiveness, and Advocacy in Nigeria (SCRNSC)” project, funded by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), seeks to address sub-national climate needs and contribute to national adaptation targets.

The launch comes at a critical time, as Nigeria is classified among the world’s ten most climate-vulnerable nations, with over 216 million citizens facing significant food crises exacerbated by climate change.

Professor Emmanuel Nzegbule, the Project Coordinator, emphasized that existing federal and state efforts to diversify the economy and meet Paris Agreement commitments risk being undermined without addressing climate impacts.

The one-year SCRNSC project will initially pilot in Abia State before expanding to Borno, Cross River, Enugu, Nasarawa, and Oyo states, covering four ecological zones.

It aims to enhance climate resilience through nature-based solutions, provide data-driven support for adaptation, improve equitable participation of vulnerable groups, and build capacity for sub-national climate action and youth activism.

Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, Chairman of NEST’s Board of Directors, highlighted the urgency of concerted efforts from international, national, and local actors to deploy effective climate change solutions, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Dr. Gloria Chinwe Njor, Executive Director of NEST, emphasized the organization’s long history of successful interventions and its openness to further collaborations.

The virtual launch featured remarks from key stakeholders, including Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Augustine Njamnshi of PACJA, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, underscoring the project’s broad support.
