Nigeria launches first Carbon Literacy programme to accelerate Just Transition

By George George Idowu

Nigeria has introduced its first Carbon Literacy programme, spearheaded by Green Waka, in collaboration with the UN-recognized Carbon Literacy Project.

This initiative aims to lay the foundation for Nigeria’s just transition to net-zero emissions by 2060, a commitment made at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021.

This was disclosed in a joint statement released by Carbon Literacy and Green Waka to newsmen recently.

The Carbon Literacy programme, already successful in the UK and expanding internationally, seeks to engage Nigerians from all walks of life in climate action.

As the nation faces increasing climate challenges, from droughts to floods, building resilience and reducing future temperature rises are critical.

According to the statement, public awareness and civic engagement are key components of this initiative. The training will foster a low-carbon culture, enabling Nigerians to contribute to a fair and inclusive transition away from fossil fuels.

The Carbon Literacy Project has already certified nearly 100,000 individuals globally, leading to significant carbon savings.

Michael Mbaike, co-founder of Green Waka, emphasized the importance of widespread literacy: “Unless we ensure mass literacy targeting the people, especially where they are, just transition is almost impossible.”

Similarly, co-founder of the Carbon Literacy Project, Phil Korbel, highlighted the role of the people in driving the transition.

He said: “The renewable power that will drive Nigeria towards a net-zero future is that of its people.”

The launch event, featuring prominent speakers such as Laurent De Boeck from the International Organisation for Migration and Eche Asuzu from the Nigeria Labour Congress, will be held today, Wednesday in Abuja.
