Nigeria invents plastic waste-to-diesel technology to boost energy security
By Abbas Nazil
Nigeria has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation that converts plastic waste into ultra-low sulphur diesel, marking a major step toward achieving energy security and environmental sustainability.
The initiative, demonstrated by Premium Blue Economy Innovation and Investment Limited in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment, uses advanced pyrolysis technology to transform discarded plastics such as bottles, nylon bags, and broken furniture into clean diesel fuel.
The event, held at Abuja’s Green Building, attracted top government officials, environmental experts, and investors who witnessed the transformation of waste into usable fuel.
The technology, developed by Nigerians Gegele Yahya Olushola and Fife Banks, represents a practical application of the Blue Economy concept, which promotes sustainable resource use for economic growth.
During the demonstration, participants observed how non-PET plastics were thermally decomposed into three outputs—ultra-low sulphur diesel, synthetic gas, and carbon material.
A vehicle powered by the locally produced diesel successfully completed a trip from Lagos to Abuja, confirming the innovation’s real-world viability.
The Minister of Environment, represented by Engr. Dr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar, hailed the project as a vital step in tackling plastic pollution while advancing clean energy goals under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Officials said the project supports Nigeria’s net-zero emissions target and the UN Sustainable Development Goals by reducing waste in landfills and providing alternative fuel for heavy industries.
Economically, the technology will reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, create jobs through waste collection and recycling, and empower local entrepreneurs across the value chain.
Premium Blue Economy Ltd plans to establish modular plastic-to-diesel hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, enhancing localized energy access and environmental awareness.
Industry leaders praised the initiative as a model for Africa’s sustainable industrial future, demonstrating that environmental stewardship and economic growth can thrive together through innovation.
