Nigeria among top 10 highest gas emitting countries – Hassan

The Chairman, Senate committee on Ecology and climate change, Sen. Lawal Hassan has revealed that Nigeria is a high net gas emitter and ranked among 10th highest gas emitting countries in the world. 

Sen. Hassan revealed this on Monday in Abuja at the National Assembly complex, as the Senate Committee on ecology and climate change held the Pre-Meeting with major Stakeholders on international summit, to deliberate on the action plans of the international summit.

The chairman committee on Ecology and climate change also stated that the source of the emissions can be traced from oil spillage and non-oil sectors such as agriculture, transportation and power sector.

“This is the first time we are having this summit in Nigeria, even in Africa,” he said.

The Pre-meeting was conveyed following the outcome of COP26, held in Glasgow last year where parties reiterated on the needs for countries to strengthen their emissions reduction and align their national climate actions to ensure that the rise in the average global temperature is reduced to at least 1.5 degree by 2030.

Also, the committee is to deliberate on deformity of Lake Chad Basin on its rapid dryness, likewise the country which has been faced with disastrous climate.

Furthermore, the committee is engaged on action plans to combat climate change menace together with individuals, citizens, corporate bodies and their roles in finding possible solutions to the problem. 

Therefore, on the resolutions of Cop 26, the committee has expedited to organize a National Green Summit on the theme: “Collective Action For Gas Emission Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation in Nigeria”.

The meeting is in collaboration with the Senate Committee on ecology and climate change which will provide Funding and other logistics support for the successful hosting of the Summit.

Additionally, the following are stakeholders at the Pre-summit meeting; Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC, Shell Nigeria, Total Energy, Ministry protection Commission, Chermic, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Shell Petroleum Development Company, National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM), National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Nigeria Air Force (NAF) and others.
