Nigeria, AGRHYMET partner on climate, hydrological data management

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to improving hydrological data management and climate services by striking a partnership with AGRHYMET, the Regional Climate Centre for West Africa and the Sahel.

This collaboration, which aims to enhance climate-related information sharing and capacity building, was discussed during a meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, and a delegation from AGRHYMET led by Acting Director-General, Dr. Baoua Issoufou, in Abuja.

The minister highlighted the priority areas for the ministry, including flood control, water supply, and climate change mitigation, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He noted the significant role of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in flood management and commended the contributions of the Nigeria Water Resources Institute (NWRI) in climate and water resource research.

Prof. Utsev also emphasized the importance of collaboration with AGRHYMET to strengthen early warning systems, improve hydrological monitoring, and boost efforts to tackle climate risks and enhance food production through the River Basin Development Authorities.

He directed that the necessary documents be finalized to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and AGRHYMET.

Dr. Baoua Issoufou explained that the partnership would promote the exchange of hydrological data and climate information across the Sahel and West Africa.

Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, ECOWAS representative, also noted the importance of digital data banks and the need for enhanced climate adaptation measures and technical support to national hydrological institutions.

Other officials present at the meeting included Dr. Emanso Umobong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of NIHSA; and senior management from both the Ministry and NIHSA.

The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening regional cooperation on climate change adaptation and water management across West Africa.
