NHF Raises Concerns About Unhealthy Imported Milk Products in Nigeria

The Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) has expressed concern about the prevalence of unhealthy imported milk products in Nigeria.

Dr. Kingsley Akinroye, the Executive Director of NHF, emphasized this in commemoration of the United Nations’ World Milk Day the 2023 in Lagos.

He highlighted the importance of investing in and expanding domestic milk production to improve the life expectancy of Nigerians.

He debunked the notion that only children need milk and stated that milk should be consumed from infancy to old age.

Dr. Akinroye stressed the need for agricultural integration to empower dairy farmers and promote milk production.

He highlighted the significance of heart-healthy milk, which is low in saturated fat, trans fat, salt, and sugar.

“Currently, approximately 80% of milk consumed in Nigeria is imported, which negatively impacts the economy, health, and life expectancy of the population, as well as the livelihoods of farmers.” Dr. Akinroye said.

He called upon the new government, including President Bola Tinubu and the Governors, to prioritize and invest in expanding milk production in Nigeria.

He explained that by increasing the production of heart-healthy milk within the country, more people would be employed, and both children and adults would live healthier lives.

Dr. Akinroye emphasized the long-term benefits of consuming milk, stating that it contributes to healthy blood vessels and promotes heart and bone health, ultimately leading to a longer lifespan.

He explained that the NHF has been actively advocating for healthy living through food labeling and has collaborated with the Federal Government on numerous initiatives over its 32 years of existence.

Prof. Tola Atinmo, Chairman of the NHF Nutrition Committee, highlighted the importance of World Milk Day in promoting education, responsible food production, and supporting livelihoods and communities.

He noted that malnutrition is a significant issue in Nigeria, with 37% of children under five years old suffering from stunted growth.

Furthermore, Prof. Adebayo Adeyemi, Chairman of Scientific Affairs at NHF, emphasized the importance of moderation in milk consumption, recommending one sachet per day for adults.

Mr. Victor Adeniran, the Brand Manager of FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Nigeria Plc, announced the company’s partnership with NHF to raise awareness about heart-healthy milk and promote a healthy lifestyle.
