NGO Sensitizes Students on Importance of Tree Planting

By Farida Salifu

Green Planet Conservation Initiative, a non-governmental organization (NGO), recently conducted an awareness program for secondary school students in Plateau State, focusing on the significance of tree planting in addressing global warming.

In an interview conducted on Sunday, January 28, 2024, in Jos, the state capital, Mr. Edward Obiozor, the organization’s executive director, disclosed that the program was aimed at children attending six public secondary schools located throughout the state.

He underlined the organization’s goal of building a sustainable future through tree planting and climate change awareness programs in schools, as well as the urgent need to confront the threats posed by global warming.

Planting trees, in our opinion, can contribute to a more sustainable environment and lessen the consequences of climate change. Through promoting knowledge of environmental protection, our goal is to motivate young people to take action and have a beneficial impact on the planet,” said Obiozor.

Furthermore, he disclosed the organization’s plan to visit more schools within the state and the commitment to planting one million trees in the Northern part of Nigeria by 2030.

Obiozor emphasized that the school tree planting campaign serves to raise awareness on the environmental dangers posed by climate change and decried the increasing deforestation in Nigeria.

In conclusion, he advised residents of Plateau and Nigerians in general to prioritize regular tree planting to contribute to environmental preservation and sustainability.
