NGO Raises Concerns Over Govt Approval of GMOs

The federal government’s support and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), especially genetically engineered crops, has drawn criticism from the non-governmental organization (NGO) Centre for Food Safety and Agricultural Research (CEFSAR).

In preparation for future talks at its next symposium, CEFSAR stressed the significance of closely examining the acceptability and application of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) during a High-Level Dialogue on Food Security that was conducted in Abuja on Wednesday.

With a core focus on preserving native seed varieties, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and supporting local farming communities, CEFSAR highlighted the potential risks associated with the recent approval of genetically modified maize, Tela Maize, for commercial release and open cultivation by the Federal Government.

Prof. Qrissturberg Amua, Executive Director of CEFSAR, underscored the need for stakeholders to engage in critical dialogue surrounding GMOs and their underlying motives.

Amua emphasized the significance of addressing consumer concerns and policy implications, particularly those emanating from the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Drawing attention to the intricate link between food security and national security, CEFSAR highlighted the adverse impact of food insecurity on societal well-being and stability.

By initiating dialogue and advocacy efforts, CEFSAR aims to raise awareness and foster informed decision-making among policymakers and consumers regarding the potential dangers posed by GMOs.

In alignment with its advocacy goals, CEFSAR seeks to debunk misinformation surrounding GMOs and promote agro-ecological methods of food production as a sustainable alternative.

Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, echoed these sentiments, advocating for a return to agro-ecological principles and techniques to ensure food sovereignty and safety.

Dr. Segun Adebayo, Director of Operations at CEFSAR, emphasized the importance of consumer awareness and choice in shaping food consumption patterns.

He urged Nigerians to prioritize natural food options over GMOs, emphasizing the significance of informed decision-making for individual and collective health.

The symposium organized by CEFSAR aims to provide a platform for robust discussions and knowledge exchange, empowering individuals to make informed choices about their food consumption habits and promoting sustainable agricultural practices for a healthier future.
