New weekly shipping service introduced to enhance trade at Onne port

By Faridat Salifu

WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has launched the Europe Afrique 4 (EURAF4) shipping service, introducing weekly direct routes to Onne Port in Rivers State.

The inaugural vessel, MV LETO, marks a step in improving international trade connections.

The EURAF4 service aims to address increasing demands for reliable shipping by enhancing connectivity and reducing transit times between Nigeria, Europe, and Asia.

Stakeholders anticipate that this initiative will provide substantial benefits to Nigerian importers and exporters by streamlining logistics and lowering costs.

Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, emphasized the launch as a strong endorsement of both WACT-APM’s capabilities and Nigeria’s economic potential.

He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Nigeria Customs Service, and other partners in bringing this service to fruition.

This initiative is part of a broader investment strategy, with APM Terminals having invested over $115 million to upgrade facilities at the terminal, including the introduction of advanced cranes and IT systems.

Klinke expressed confidence that these enhancements will attract more shipping lines and increase trade volumes, further stimulating economic growth in Eastern Nigeria.

Fanick Atchai, Head of Operations, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to exceptional service, focusing on efficient operations and reduced port stay times.

The arrival of the MV LETO signifies a new era for Onne Port, facilitating stronger trade links and supporting the regional economy.

Raymond Abdulraham, Onne Port manager, highlighted the importance of increased shipping activity for revenue generation, while Comptroller Mohammed Babandede from the Nigeria Customs Service praised the partnership efforts in expanding port services.

The event brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, underlining the collaborative spirit that will drive the success of the EURAF4 service and enhance trade opportunities.
