The Neighbourhood Environment Watch Foundation (NEW-F) has planted 500 tree seedlings in Ogada-Edda and Ohatekwe-Edda communities in Ebonyi State as part of its campaign to address climate change challenges.
The initiative is under the foundation’s “Strengthening Local Advocacy Against Climate Change” (SLACC) programme, aimed at promoting forest conservation and sustainable environmental practices in the region.
Dr. Kelechi Okezie, Executive Director of NEW-F, disclosed the tree planting exercise in an interview on June 23, 2025, in .
He noted that the communities donated land for the trees, reflecting strong local commitment to forest preservation.
Okezie urged residents to care for the seedlings to realize their social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Highlighting the dangers of deforestation, Okezie lamented the extinction of indigenous tree species, including the local “akparata” tree, which vanished after being heavily exploited by foreign loggers.
He called on both communities and government authorities to intensify efforts to halt indiscriminate tree felling.
Okezie also referenced the UN’s designation of March 21 as International Day of Forests, a day dedicated to raising awareness about sustainable forest management.
He further urged the public to protect the environment and avoid activities that cause degradation, pollution, and environmental abuse, in line with the recent 2025 World Environment Day observance on June 6.
The foundation’s efforts seek to mobilize community action against climate change while fostering biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability in Ebonyi State.
