Nestlé targets 95% recyclable plastic package by 2025

By Faridat Salifu

The Managing Director of Nestlé Nigeria, Wassim Elhusseini, has said that more than 80% of Nestlé’s packaging in Nigeria is now recyclable.

He added that by 2025, the company aims for over 95% of its plastic packaging to be recyclable.

Elhusseini disclosed the company’s plans while speaking during the unveiling ceremony of new packaging for Golden Morn which replaces the traditional aluminium foil with materials that are more conducive to recycling.

He said, “Upgrading Golden Morn’s packaging to a recyclable laminate is a step forward in reducing waste and reinforcing our leadership in environmental responsibility within the industry.”

According to him, Nestle have dual focus which are delivering nutritious products while also preserving the environment for future generations.

He said this shift will not only mitigates environmental impact but also advances the principles of a circular economy, where resources are efficiently reused to minimize waste and reduce dependency on virgin materials.

The switch to this innovative packaging is aligned with Nestlé’s broader global initiative to increase the recyclability of its products, Elhusseini highlighted.

He said the development is a signal from Nestle to continue to deliver wholesome food while adopting sustainable processes, a dedication that has characterized the brand’s existence in Nigerian homes for almost forty years.

In his contribution during the ceremony, Omofasa Orhiunu, Category Manager for Dairy at Nestlé Nigeria, Omofasa Orhiunu, explained that Golden Morn’s mission extends beyond just being a breakfast option.

“Golden Morn is a purpose-driven brand, committed not only to nourishing Nigerian families but also to protecting our planet for the future.

“The introduction of the new sustainable packaging is a reflection of this mission, ensuring that the cereal remains a wholesome choice for consumers while also contributing to environmental conservation,” Orhiunu declared.

In addition to the new packaging, Golden Morn continues its commitment to sustainability by sourcing all of its maize and soya locally.

This practice, according to Orhiunu, not only guarantees fresh, high quality ingredients but also supports Nigerian farmers, strengthening local economies and communities a key aspect of Nestlé’s commitment to both people and the planet.

Golden Morn has long been a breakfast staple in Nigeria, cherished for its blend of locally sourced maize and soya, enriched with essential vitamins and minerals like vitamins A, B1, B5, C, and iron.
