Nestlè tackles plastic pollution with 50% recycled water bottles

By Faridat Salifu

Nestlé Nigeria has made a significant stride in environmental sustainability with the introduction of new Pure Life water bottles comprising 50% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

This move underscores Nestlé’s commitment to reducing the use of virgin plastics in its packaging, and it has been met with praise and acknowledgment from various government officials and stakeholders.

At the official unveiling of the 50% rPET Nestle Pure Life bottled water in Abuja, the Minister for Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, commended Nestlé’s initiative and emphasized its alignment with strategies that support environmental sustainability and local economies.

Nestlé’s commitment to increasing the use of rPET across its global brands was highlighted as an important step in driving forward environmental conservation efforts.

Wassim Elhusseini, the managing director/CEO of Nestlé Nigeria Plc, emphasized the company’s dedication to achieving a “one tonne in, one tonne out” principle and reducing virgin plastic in its packaging, with the goal of achieving a one-third reduction by 2025.

The introduction of 50% rPET in the water bottles received recognition and commendation from regulatory agencies and government stakeholders, including the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite.

Nestlé Nigeria’s collaborative efforts with ALEF Recycling Company have been instrumental in achieving the milestone of 50% rPET in its water bottles.

This committed approach to environmental sustainability and responsible plastic usage represents a positive step for Nigeria and reflects Nestlé’s dedication to a safer and more sustainable environment.
