In accordance with the project supported by the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has gathered 300 tonnes of electronic garbage.

At the inauguration of an Inter-Agency Committee to ensure an e-waste free environment at the conclusion of the Digital Switch Over in Nigeria, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, Director-General of NESREA, announced this.

Jauro said the e-waste had been given to the two recyclers as part of the GEF initiative. He was represented by Mr. Abdulsalaam Isa, Director, Inspection and Enforcement.

According to him, NESREA oversaw the development of 30 collection centres in Lagos State as part of the GEF initiative.

According to him, the agency also improved two recycling facilities in the state and trained government regulators and the value chain for e-waste.

The director of NESERA stated that the organisation also offered Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for collectors, including unofficial collectors. Around 400 unofficial e-waste collectors were formalised.

In line with the circular economy, the agency “carried out awareness campaigns on the project on various media and gazetted the Guidance Document for the implementation of the EPR Program for the sector,” the speaker claimed.
