NEPC, lawmaker empower 50 A/Ibom farmers with palm seedlings, cash

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), in partnership with Hon. Paul Ekpo, member representing Etinan Federal Constituency, have empowered 50 farmers in Akwa Ibom State with oil palm seedlings and financial support to boost palm oil production.

Each farmer received 100 oil palm seedlings and ₦100,000 to enhance cultivation across Etinan, Nsit Ibom, and Nsit Ubium Local Government Areas, which make up the constituency.

NEPC Executive Director, Mrs. Nonye Ayeni, represented by South-South Regional Coordinator, Mr. Ben Etegbe, said the initiative was part of a federal strategy to position Nigeria as a leading palm oil producer.

She described oil palm production as a lifetime investment with immense export potential.

“Palm oil remains a huge investment opportunity, especially with increasing demand driven by population and industrial growth,” Ayeni said.

She noted Nigeria currently produces only 1.2 million metric tons of palm oil annually—far below the domestic consumption need of 2.5 million metric tons.

Ayeni emphasized the need to harness the country’s untapped potential in the sector, pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to transform Nigeria from a net importer to an exporter of palm oil.

Ekpo commended NEPC for supporting his constituency, noting the project’s aim is to elevate local farmers to global markets.

He encouraged farmers to plant the seedlings, not sell them, and embrace oil palm cultivation as a long-term wealth creation path.

“Every part of the oil p”alm has value,” Ekpo maintained, expressing confidence, “This empowerment will produce future millionaires.”

Earlier, Principal Traprede Promotion Officer, Mr. Toju Mac-Jaja, trained the farmers on palm species, planting techniques, and business skills.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Emem Jimmy, praised the initiative, saying it would promote self-reliance.

He also appealed to the state government and private investors to establish a standard oil processing mill in the area.
