NEMA Warns of Imminent Flooding in Kwara State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning about the potential flooding in parts of Kwara State.

Residents in the identified flood-prone areas are urged to relocate to avoid casualties.

The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency’s 2024 Annual Flood Outlook has identified 31 states, including 148 local government areas, as high flood risk zones.

In Kwara State, the high and moderate risk areas include Patigi, Edu, Kaiama, Asa, and Baruten local government areas.

To address this threat, NEMA convened a meeting to alert leaders of these vulnerable areas. The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, emphasized the importance of heeding early warning signs.

Represented by Mr. Daniel Obot, the Director of Disaster Risk Reduction, she urged the state to implement proactive measures.

The Kwara State government advocated for regular dredging of the River Niger, constructing more buffer zones, and promoting afforestation to mitigate flood risks.

Representatives from the affected communities also called for early relocation of residents and a permanent solution to the flooding issue.

This meeting highlighted the critical need for effective early actions to protect lives and livelihoods during the rainy season.
