NEMA warns lagos residents to prepare for flooding

By Abdullahi Lukman

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged residents of Lagos State to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of flooding as the rainy season approaches.

In a statement issued Saturday, NEMA’s Lagos Operations Head, Mohammed Olatunde, said the warning follows the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which identified Lagos as a high-risk state for flooding.

He emphasised the need for early preparedness to prevent loss of lives, displacement and damage to property, noting that thousands of communities across the country have been classified as vulnerable.

Olatunde attributed recurring floods largely to human activities such as blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal and construction on natural waterways. He advised residents to regularly clear gutters, avoid dumping refuse in drains and relocate from flood-prone areas where necessary.

He also called on community leaders to promote environmental compliance and urged households to develop emergency plans, protect valuables and monitor weather updates and early warning alerts from relevant agencies, including the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Motorists and pedestrians were cautioned against moving through flooded areas due to safety risks.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the long-term impact of climate change.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier cautioned that failure to address climate risks could cost the state up to $40 billion by 2050.
