NeGD, IPA partner on revolutionizing India’s maritime sector

By Abbas Nazil

The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and the Indian Ports Association (IPA) have formalized a partnership to drive digital transformation in India’s maritime sector, an initiative poised to modernize port operations and enhance the supply chain’s efficiency.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on December 24, 2024, integrates NeGD’s expertise in technology with IPA’s extensive maritime and logistics knowledge, both nationally and internationally.

This collaboration targets persistent challenges in the sector, including fragmented logistics systems, outdated operational processes, and insufficient digital infrastructure.

By embracing emerging technologies and leveraging real-time data and analytics, the partnership envisions a connected network of ports that optimizes operations, minimizes turnaround times, and enhances overall supply chain efficiency.

Central to this initiative is the development of advanced software solutions, system integration, and capacity building within the industry.

These measures aim to create a technologically advanced maritime ecosystem, aligning with India’s broader ambition of establishing itself as a global leader in digitalized maritime operations.

Senior officials present at the MoU signing included NandKumarum, President and CEO of NeGD, Vikas Narwal, Managing Director of IPA, Arvind Bhisikar, Executive Director (IT) of IPA, and Rajnish Kumar, Chief Operating Officer of NeGD.

Their collective commitment underscores the importance of this partnership in addressing the systemic inefficiencies of the sector.

Established in 2009 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), NeGD operates as part of the Digital India Corporation and has been at the forefront of driving digital adoption across sectors.

Its collaboration with IPA signifies its expanding role in revolutionizing India’s critical industries through innovative technologies.

The IPA, founded in 1966 under the Societies Registration Act, has grown into a key institution promoting the growth of India’s Major Ports under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

Over the years, it has evolved into a think tank, providing strategic guidance to integrate and advance the maritime sector.

This partnership’s impact will be transformative, as it envisions an interconnected port network that ensures seamless information flow and real-time decision-making.

These advancements will not only reduce inefficiencies but also bolster India’s competitiveness in global trade by meeting the evolving demands of international logistics.

The MoU marks a pivotal step in addressing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities in the maritime sector.

By enhancing operational performance and fostering innovation, this collaboration is set to secure long-term benefits for the industry, boosting economic growth and strengthening India’s position in the global maritime landscape. END
