NEDC warns against unauthorized use of identity
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has warned individuals and organizations against the unauthorized use of its name, logo, and official identity, stating that offenders risk legal action under relevant Nigerian laws.
In a public disclaimer issued on Friday, the commission said it had observed the activities of individuals and entities falsely claiming affiliation with the agency through digital and print platforms.
It described the acts as deceptive and intended to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.
The commission stressed that the use of its branding, insignia, logo, or institutional identity without prior written approval is strictly prohibited.
It added that any website, social media account, publication, or platform using its official identity without authorization should be regarded as fraudulent.
According to the NEDC, such actions violate several Nigerian laws, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, and the Trade Marks Act, Cap T13 LFN 2004. The commission noted that offenders could face regulatory sanctions, criminal prosecution, and civil litigation.
It further stated that enforcement measures may include the removal of fake online platforms, legal proceedings for damages, and other penalties provided under applicable laws.
The commission urged members of the public to verify information about its activities through official communication channels and avoid dealing with unauthorized persons or platforms claiming to represent the agency.
“Members of the public are advised to refrain from engaging with unauthorized platforms or individuals claiming affiliation with the Commission and to report suspicious accounts or activities to the appropriate authorities or the Commission,” the statement said.
The NEDC also clarified that it would not be liable for any losses, transactions, or representations arising from dealings with unauthorized individuals or organizations using its identity.
