NCPB Distributes Subsidized Fertilizers to Boost Food Security in Kenya
The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has taken significant strides towards bolstering food security in Kenya by distributing government-subsidized DAP planting fertilizers to registered farmers across the country.
Out of the total 1.4 million bags of assorted varieties of fertilizers allocated for the 2022/2023 short rains season, the NCPB has already distributed 307,200 bags of 50 kilograms each to farmers through its depots.
The Managing Director of NCPB, Joseph Kimote, highlighted the importance of the subsidized DAP fertilizer in the drive to enhance food security and promote agricultural productivity. Priced at Sh 3,500 per 50 kg bag, the DAP fertilizer is a crucial component of the government’s efforts to support farmers during the short rains season.
The distribution program was publicly launched on 22nd September 2022 by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following a directive from the President.
While the distribution of DAP planting fertilizers is ongoing, NCPB is also gearing up to provide CAN/Urea top-dressing fertilizers and Agricultural Lime to farmers.
To ensure inclusivity and efficiency in the supply and distribution process, the Board has invited bids from manufacturers and distributors of fertilizers to supply crop-specific blends for planting and topdressing.
This move aims to cater to the needs of various crops and enhance the overall agricultural output.

Kimote emphasized that the crop-specific fertilizers will also benefit registered tea and coffee farmers who are not covered under the KTDA and the New KPCU distribution frameworks.
By extending the benefits to these farmers, the government aims to support diverse agricultural activities and promote sustainability in the sector.
In collaboration with the Council of Governors (CoG), NCPB is working to bring the subsidized fertilizers closer to farmers at the grassroots level through county outlets. To facilitate ease of access, the Board is planning to establish county government-supported satellite-selling centers.
These centers will enable farmers to acquire the fertilizers conveniently, ensuring that a wider segment of the farming community benefits from the subsidy program.
Kimote urged farmers to register with their respective ward Agricultural Officers to avail themselves of the subsidized fertilizers. The NCPB, in partnership with local leadership, is actively sensitizing farmers on the ongoing distribution of subsidized fertilizers through social media and vernacular radio station engagements.
He also commended the Council of Governors and county administrators for their vital role in overseeing the distribution exercise, while the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) ensure the program’s smooth implementation and overall security.
