NCF, Lagos task residents on climate change

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, on Saturday walked for nature across Lagos metropolis to sensitise the public on climate change.

The Chairman, National Executive Coucil, NCF, Mr Ede Dafinone, said that the walk was aimed at creating awareness on the need for the environment to be conserved and protected.

“The walk which took place at Ikeja, Surulere, Ikoyi and Obalende simultaneously was aimed at educating the masses about the environment,” Dafinone said.

Mr Uchenna Achunine, Director, Business Development and Communication, NCF, while speaking with journalists after the walk, said climate changenis a global affair which affects everyone in the world.

“For instance, people think when they see a tree, they can cut it and sell the wood. The reality is that the number of trees you cut reduces the quantity of oxygen.

“The less oxygen we have, the more endangered our lives become. If we can reduce environmental pollution then we can live a better healthy life,” Achunine said.

He said that the NCF was championing a project with the Lagos State Government to restore the Nigerian forest to 25 per cent by 2047.

“It’s a project that involves everybody because everybody needs fresh air and if you can’t breath fresh air, your life will be threatened.

“In Lekki Conservation Centre, we have air quality control system that shows that the place has best air quality in Lagos State.

“This shows that the more trees you plant and the greener the environment, the more you live a healthier life.

“So, it is a call to one another to join hands and make our world green,” he said.

Also speaking, an environmentalist, Mr Desmond Majekodunmi, described the walk as an encouraging one.

Majekodunmi said that people needed to be aware of their environment.

“We need to really try to create as much awareness for protecting the environment as we can.

“When you have young people walking and declaring for the environment, wearing labels, T shirts and so on, it helps because there’s not enough awareness about this environment issue.

“So, now nature itself is expressing the warning telling us we need to wake up and start working far more harmoniously with nature, care for nature, and then nature can care for you.

“All this gross flooding we’re having is because of far too much pollution that’s causing the global warming that’s making far more rains,” he said.
