NatureNews HEAD Awards nomination ends September 7th
Nigeria’s foremost newspaper on environment and climate change, NatureNews, said nomination of deserving individuals and organizations for its annual Hero of Environment Actions for Development (HEAD) awards ends September 7, 2022.
A statement by the newspaper’s Chief Operating Officer, Pius Alabi, says nomination of deserving awardees via headawards@naturenews.africa closes on September 7, 2022 after which the winners will be shortlisted and unveiled.
He said the HEAD award, which was instituted in 2021, “recognises individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions, or developed innovative solutions, to climate change mitigation and sustainable environment”.
Mr. Alabi explained that the prestigious awards will be in three categories, namely, individual, private sector, and public sector, adding that NatureNews encourages the nomination of women and youth innovators.
He said the maiden awards were given last year to two young entrepreneurs in recognition of their innovative solutions for the upcycling of non-degradable materials that poses danger to the environment.
According to him, one of the awardees, Architect Intissar Bashir Kurfi, pioneered the upcycling of plastic and polythene bags in the production of super-capacity concrete interlocks.
He said the second awardee, Ms. Favour Oluma, a student of Federal University of Technology, Minna and a social entrepreneur, was recognised for her creative upcycling of condemned tyres in making exquisite home decor.
He noted that the maiden awards were presented in Abuja at an impressive ceremony attended by critical stakeholders including the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu, and Tanzanian former Minister of Environment, Prof. Mark Mwandosya who gave the keynote speech on “Climate Change: Resilience and Mitigation”.
The promoter of the HEAD award, NatureNews newspaper, was launched on October 1, 2020 to report issues around the environment, climate change and sustainable earth
