By Omotayo Edubi

Prof. Mark Mwandosya, Chairman Stanbic Bank, Tanzania Ltd and former Minister/Head, climate change studies programme, Tanzania, said that Africa had been supple to disasters because of its population.

Mwandosya, said this via video connection while giving the anniversary lecture on “Climate Africa: Resilience and Adaptation” first edition of ClimateAfrica magazine on Tuesday.

He said since water scarcity and food insecurity are major indicators of climate change and variability, every government both international and local should give priority to climate change and global warming.

“This subject requires several considerations. It should be part of SDGs, as mainstreaming climate change in the entire polity is imperative.

“In doing so, there should be equity, efficiency, self reliance, indigenous knowledge, and technological development,’’ he said.

In suggesting solutions to climate change, Mwandosya, who is also the Founding Chancellor of the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST), Tanzania, urged world leaders not to treat climate change as just a subject or a discipline that requires several reconsideration but should be part of sustainable development.

Issues like governance, self efficiency, capacity building, ingenious development, technology development incorporation should also be an important consideration, he said.

He noted that the manifestation of wrong temperature in Africa include; disturbing expansion of the Sahara Desert, drying of Lake Faguibine in Mali, dissection of mount Kilimanjaro.

At the end of his lecture, he congratulated the publisher of ClimateAfrica Magazine, Aliu Akoshile, on the first anniversary of NatureNews and the launch of the magazine.
