Nasarawa govt to revive two idle recycling plants

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to restore two underutilised waste recycling plants in Lafia and Karu as part of efforts to strengthen waste management and reduce environmental pollution.

Briefing journalists after the November sanitation exercise in Lafia, the Secretary of the State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, Christopher Abari, said the facilities—located in Angwan Rere (Lafia) and Auta Balefi (Karu)—had recorded minimal activity but would soon return to full operation.

He noted that the plants would be upgraded with modern machinery to enhance efficient waste processing.

Abari added that the rehabilitation aligns with the state’s broader environmental strategy, which includes the distribution of waste bins across all 13 LGAs to encourage proper disposal and ongoing evacuation of refuse by agency staff.

He urged residents to use designated collection points to curb disease outbreaks and maintain a clean environment.

He commended the level of compliance during the sanitation exercise and acknowledged the support of security agencies, traditional rulers, and the media.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Chief Prosecutor Officer, Abubakar Mohammed, revealed that 96 people were arrested across the 13 LGAs for violating sanitation laws.

He said the offenders were caught conducting private business during the exercise, contrary to Section 9(2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Law, and were prosecuted by mobile courts to deter future violations.
