NAMPOWER AND CHINESE FIRMS UNITE TO PIONEER ELECTRICITY STORAGE SYSTEM
By Faridat Salifu
NamPower, the state-owned power corporation of Namibia, has recently unveiled a momentous collaboration with the esteemed Chinese companies Shandong Electrical, Engineering & Equipment Group and Zhejiang Narada Power Source.
Together, they are set to establish a groundbreaking 54 MW/54 MWh battery-based electricity storage system at the Omburu substation, marking a significant advancement for large-scale electricity storage in Namibia.
Situated in the renewable energy-rich region of Erongo, the Omburu substation has been designated as the installation site for these cutting-edge energy storage facilities. This strategic move reflects NamPower’s dedication to enhancing grid stability, especially in addressing the intermittent nature of solar power generation, further compounded by the presence of a 20 MWp solar photovoltaic plant in the region.
With an anticipated construction period of 18 months, the project has been bolstered by a €20 million grant from the German Development Agency (KfW). NamPower’s significant investment of approximately 100 million Namibian dollars will be instrumental in facilitating the development of the transmission interconnection, technical consultancy, project management, and the owner’s engineer. This underscores the corporation’s unwavering commitment to advancing the country’s energy infrastructure.
NamPower’s visionary outlook on this pioneering project positions the battery storage system as pivotal in revolutionizing the generation, distribution, and consumption of electricity in Namibia. The venture represents a fundamental shift towards a more resilient and sustainable future, embodying NamPower’s forward-thinking ethos.
