Nakilat Promotes Sustainable Maritime Transport With New LNG Carriers

By Faridat Salifu
Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) has marked a pivotal moment in its ongoing expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) capabilities with the recent steel cutting ceremony for eight new LNG carriers at Hanwha Ocean shipyard in South Korea.
This ceremony symbolizes not just the beginning of construction but also a major advancement in Qatar’s ambitious LNG fleet expansion project, which aims to bolster the nation’s capacity to meet the growing maritime transport demands of the global LNG sector.
In February 2024, Nakilat signed landmark agreements with QatarEnergy to charter and operate 25 conventional-size LNG carriers.
This strategic partnership not only positions Nakilat as both the owner and operator of these vessels but also reinforces its stature as a leading global player in LNG shipping.
By taking ownership of the vessels, Nakilat is enhancing its operational autonomy and flexibility, allowing it to better serve its clients and adapt to the dynamic needs of the LNG market.
The new LNG carriers, each boasting a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, are designed with cutting-edge technologies that prioritize efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability.
These advancements reflect the industry’s shift towards more innovative solutions aimed at reducing emissions and minimizing the environmental footprint of maritime transport.
Features of the new designs are expected to enhance performance while adhering to the highest safety standards, thereby setting a new benchmark for LNG shipping.
Abdullah Al-Sulaiti, Chief Executive Officer of Nakilat, expressed pride in the collaboration with QatarEnergy and Hanwha Ocean.
He described the start of construction as a significant milestone that aligns with Qatar’s broader vision for LNG transportation and underscores the commitment to maintaining a world-class fleet.
This collaboration exemplifies the collective effort towards not only expanding capacity but also enhancing the operational capabilities that underpin Qatar’s role as a key player in the global energy market.
The expansion of Nakilat’s fleet comes at a critical time when the demand for LNG continues to rise globally, driven by the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
As countries around the world seek to reduce their reliance on coal and other fossil fuels, LNG is increasingly viewed as a crucial component in achieving energy security and sustainability. Nakilat’s initiative to expand its fleet is thus timely, positioning it to capitalize on these evolving market dynamics.
The steel cutting ceremony at Hanwha Ocean is more than just a technical milestone; it represents Nakilat’s strategic commitment to advancing the LNG sector while prioritizing sustainability and innovation.
As the company embarks on this new chapter, it not only strengthens its operational framework but also contributes to the broader goals of energy transition and environmental stewardship in the maritime industry.
