NAGGW focus on tree planting to combat desertification in George George Idowu
The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) has disclosed that the agency will focus on planting more trees to tackle land degradation and raise awareness about the significance of nurturing trees for long-term sustainability.
The Director-General of the agency, Alhaji Saleh Abubakar gave the hint at weekend during a field inspection on Saturday at the Fagwalawa community in Makoda Local Government Area of Kano State.
Abubakar highlighted the agency’s critical mission to curb desert encroachment and promote sustainable land management emphasizing the importance of protecting these belts in the front-line states.
He noted that the field visit was intended to assess the progress of the agency’s projects and identify areas that need improvement.
Kano Field Officer, Mr. Ahmad Ismail also spoke during the visit, stating that the Fagwalawa site is a vital location for the agency’s shelter belt initiatives.
According to him, the project aims to establish a network of trees and vegetation to protect the region from soil erosion and desertification.
Ismail further urged local communities to take ownership of these environmental projects to ensure their success and to help restore degraded land, ultimately reducing poverty in the region.
