N-HYPPADEC pledges urgent upgrade to Dukku water supply

By Abdullahi Lukman

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission has pledged to take immediate steps to address water shortages in Dukku by upgrading existing water infrastructure.

Director of Operations, Ilyasu Wara, made the disclosure during a visit to the area following complaints of severe water scarcity, noting that the agency is considering a rapid intervention to repair and expand the Dukku water scheme rather than initiate a new project.

Wara said the commission would prioritise improving existing facilities by sourcing water directly from the river and installing proper intake and distribution systems, while also considering expanding the town’s reservoir to boost storage capacity.

He stressed the urgency of the intervention, indicating that work could commence within six weeks to prevent delays during the rainy season, and described reliance on boreholes as inadequate for sustaining the growing population.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Water, Environment and Forest Resources, Mohammed Fawu, said the initiative would complement state government efforts, noting that the Dukku water project had long been stalled due to insufficient funding.

Fawu added that N-HYPPADEC’s support would accelerate progress, improve supply capacity, and reduce dependence on expensive water vendors, while confirming that the commission has approved two hybrid boreholes as a temporary measure to enhance water availability.
