MURIC urges FCT Minister to tackle Abuja’s waste crisis

By Abbas Nazil

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Abuja Chapter, has appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to address the worsening waste management situation in Abuja.

The group expressed concern over the growing heaps of refuse littering the city, which was once regarded as one of the cleanest and most-organized capitals in Africa.

According to MURIC, the decline in waste collection and disposal services has turned Abuja into an eyesore, endangering public health and tarnishing the city’s image.

The organization urged the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other relevant agencies to prioritize effective waste management through consistent and reliable refuse collection schedules.

It particularly emphasized the need for improved waste collection in high-density areas such as the Central Area, Wuse, Garki, Maitama, Asokoro, and the five Area Councils.

MURIC also called for an upgrade in waste management infrastructure, including the provision of functional disposal trucks, regular maintenance, and the introduction of night-time waste collection to reduce odour pollution and avoid daytime traffic disruptions.

It further suggested the deployment of motorised street-sweeping machines to enhance sanitation efficiency across the FCT.

The group appealed for public enlightenment campaigns to encourage proper waste disposal practices among residents, stressing that collective responsibility is vital to maintaining a clean environment.

It also urged collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and residents to implement sustainable waste management solutions with accountability and regular monitoring.

MURIC urged Minister Wike to act decisively, restoring Abuja’s lost glory as a clean, healthy, and thriving capital city.
