MTN Launches 700 kWp Solar Park In Johannesburg

By Faridat Salifu

MTN’s South African arm is making strides in sustainability by unveiling its new solar park initiative at its Johannesburg headquarters.

With an initial capacity of 700 kWp, this solar power plant is just the beginning of MTN’s commitment to investing in renewable energy. By aiming to double its capacity by the end of February 2024, the company is solidifying its stance on sustainability and reducing its reliance on traditional grid sources like Eskom.

Due to the ongoing challenge of load shedding in South Africa, many companies are seeking alternative energy solutions, making MTN’s move towards solar power not only environmentally friendly but also a practical solution to energy challenges.

With plans to develop a 4.9 MWp solar farm, MTN is working towards not only reducing its carbon footprint but also becoming more self-sufficient in its energy needs.

MTN’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 sets it apart as a leader in the industry, with plans for groundbreaking projects like the Island Mode initiative, which integrates various technologies to create a micro-grid for increased energy resilience. By diversifying its energy sources and embracing renewable energy, MTN is paving the way for a more sustainable future for its operations.

With the completion of the 1.8 MW solar power plant expected by the end of February 2024, MTN’s headquarters will be significantly less reliant on Eskom, marking a significant step towards energy independence.

This commitment to sustainability is not unique to MTN, as other companies like Saint-Gobain are also partnering to supply clean electricity to their facilities, signaling a broader shift towards renewable energy adoption in South Africa.
