Morocco launches Noor Atlas solar programme to expand clean energy

By Abdullahi Lukman

Morocco has launched the Noor Atlas solar programme to boost its renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The initiative, led by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen), will develop several solar photovoltaic power plants across the country with a combined capacity of about 305 megawatts.

The project will be implemented in multiple locations, including Outat El Haj, Enjil and Boudnib. Authorities say distributing the plants across different regions will improve electricity generation and strengthen the stability of the national power grid.

Officials added that the programme is part of Morocco’s broader national strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix and enhance energy security.

The construction of the solar plants is also expected to create jobs for local communities. Workers will be employed during the building phase, while the operational stage will require technicians and engineers for maintenance and management of the facilities.

Funding for the programme will come from a combination of domestic resources and international investment, reflecting growing global confidence in Morocco’s renewable energy sector and regulatory framework.

Morocco has emerged as a leading renewable energy market in the Middle East and North Africa, partly due to projects such as the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, one of the world’s largest solar power facilities.

Analysts say the Noor Atlas programme is expected to further strengthen the country’s position as a regional leader in solar energy development while expanding clean electricity supply nationwide.
