Monkey Kola is one of the species of West African Kolanut tree that is widely grown. It’s scientifically called Cola lepidota K. Schum but known as Achicha in Igbo, Goron biri in Hausa, Obi Edun in Yoruba and Ndiyah in Efik. It has three variaties which are yellow, white and red monkey Kola but the most popular and well cultivated specie is the yellow variety.

Monkey Kola has loads of health benefits. It is high in Potassium, beta-carotene. It is also rich in vitamin B, Copper, Zinc, Iron, B-vitamin, Calcium, magnesium, Saponins and phytochemicals. 

Monkey Kola has the potential of building strong bones and teeth and also helps to prevent fracture. This is due to its potassium and calcium content.  Potassium also helps to reduce the effects of acids in the body and retains calcium in the bone. It protects the bone and reduce the risk of Osteoporosis. Potassium is great for the heart health. It controls the myocardium and ensures proper heartbeat and it prevents the arteries from hardening thereby ensuring  optimal heart function.

Monkey Kola has anti-oxidants like Vitamin C, tannins, anthocyanin and flavonoids. These anti-oxidants helps in fighting cancerous cells and all forms of inflammations. They also prevent toxic or harmful substances that affects the general function of the body. They help in boosting the immune systems and fight diseases.

Vitamin A and beta-carotene  are benefitial for eye health. They keep the eye moist and enhance vision. Vitamin C in Monkey Kola also helps to fix and repair damaged skin. It removes wrinkling and keeps the skin young.

Monkey Kola reduces the amount of bad cholesterol and improves the good cholesterol in the body. It contains soluble fibre that is beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. It is healthy for weight management.
