Mokwa flood: How FG plans to avert recurrence

By Abdullahi Lukman

To avert recurrence of floods in Mokwa, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated urgent repairs of all bridges damaged by the May 29 flood, as well as the rehabilitation of blocked drainages and waterways in Mokwa and surroundings.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also approved the immediate release of N2 billion to support the reconstruction of residential buildings destroyed by a recent flood in Mokwa, Niger State.

These were disclosed by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday when he paid a visit to the flood-affected communities in Niger State.

The Vice President, who conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the damage, also announced that President Tinubu has ordered the release of 20 trucks of rice for immediate distribution to victims of the disaster.

“In addition to the N2 billion for housing reconstruction, President Tinubu has directed the immediate release of relief materials, including 20 trucks of rice, to alleviate the suffering of those affected,” Shettima said.

The flood, which hit Mokwa and parts of Niger State last week, left a trail of destruction, with several lives lost and property worth millions of naira damaged.

Entire communities were submerged, displacing hundreds of families and disrupting livelihoods.

Vice President Shettima assured residents that the Federal Government is committed to not only providing immediate relief but also finding long-term solutions to the recurring issue of flooding in the region.

“President Tinubu stands with the people of Niger State in this trying time.

He is deeply concerned and has directed that all necessary steps be taken to bring relief and ensure such tragedies are minimized in the future,” Shettima added.

Also, over the weekend, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, visited the affected communities to express the Federal Government’s condolences and solidarity with the people of Niger State.

He emphasized the government’s resolve to support the state in its recovery efforts.

The federal intervention is expected to bolster state and local efforts in responding to the disaster and aid in the rebuilding of essential infrastructure and housing.
