Minister Urges Public Involvement in Reporting Poorly Constructed Roads for Swift Action

By Grace Samuel

In a recent statement on November 27th, the Federal Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, emphasized the need for public collaboration in addressing poorly constructed roads across the nation.

Umahi urged citizens to promptly photograph and report any substandard roads, providing essential details such as the contractor’s name, location, and observed defects. To facilitate reporting, he shared contact numbers: 08030986263, 08037086137.

Acknowledging public concerns about the state of federal roads, Umahi assured that the Federal Government, in partnership with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), is actively working to enhance infrastructure on Nigerian federal roads.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly well-informed about the road conditions, and the current administration is committed to addressing these issues.

Umahi disclosed a substantial financial commitment to the Ministry of Works, with $300 billion allocated, including $100 billion for immediate projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and all 36 states.

An additional $200 billion has been approved for the continuation of ongoing projects inherited from previous administrations, set to commence on December 1st, 2023, as directed by President Tinubu.

The minister clarified that the government’s intention is not to breach existing contracts but to diligently ensure the completion of all federal road projects to a high standard.

Emphasizing accountability, Umahi stated that rigorous supervision is in place, with a commitment to hold individuals accountable for any shortcomings in project delivery.

The ministry is striving to meet all deadlines, aiming to conclude assigned tasks by November 30th, 2023.
