Minister advocates concrete roads for flood-prone areas, citing durability

By Faridat Salifu

David Umahi, the Minister of Works, recently advocated for the use of continuous reinforcement concrete pavement technology for selected roads in flood-prone regions across Nigeria.

This approach is particularly suited for areas with high water tables and heavy traffic, he stated during an inspection of a reconstruction project on the East-West Road in Delta State.

Umahi highlighted the long-term benefits of concrete roads, noting that they can last between 50 to 100 years compared to just 10 years for asphalt roads.

He emphasized that concrete is a vital solution for road durability in areas prone to flooding.

During his visit, the minister interacted with local youth and community leaders, who praised the quality of the ongoing work and requested further development in their areas. Motorists also expressed their gratitude for improvements in road conditions.

Umahi inspected several other significant road projects in Delta State and urged contractors to expedite their work, reinforcing President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
