The Jigawa State government has procured agricultural machines worth over N26.2 billion to boost mechanized agriculture in the state.
The contract for the procurement was approved by the State Executive Council during a meeting presided over by Governor Umar Namadi on Thursday, 19th September 2024.
The machines are: 300 tractors, 300 disc ploughs, 300 disc harrows, 300 disc ridgers, 300 tipping trailers, 150 multi-purpose planters, 150 rice seeders, 40 combined harvesters, and 80 boom sprayers.
They are to be deployed for the enhancement of the mechanization of agriculture in the state and boosting food production across all 30 constituencies.
According to government sources, the first batch of the equipment has already arrived in Dutse, the state capital.
The remaining machinery is expected to arrive within the next one month, ensuring timely deployment ahead of the next farming season.
In addition to equipment procurement, the state government also earmarked N263.16 million for the training of 30 master technicians in China.
These technicians have now successfully completed their three-month training and have returned to the country, fully equipped to handle the servicing and maintenance of the newly acquired machinery.
Each of these trained technicians is tasked with managing two agricultural service centres, bringing the total number of centres to be established to 60—two centres in each of the 30 state constituencies.
To ensure the smooth operation and sustainability of the initiative, the state government has also registered a new company named “Jigawa State Agricultural Mechanization Service.”
This company is charged with the responsibility of managing and coordinating the use of the machinery across the state.
It will operate through the 60 service centres strategically distributed to serve every constituency, providing farmers with easy access to modern farming equipment and technical support.
The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between smallholder farmers and access to mechanized farming tools, thereby reducing drudgery, increasing efficiency, and improving yield.
This massive investment signals a new era for agriculture in Jigawa State, as it aligns with Governor Namadi’s vision to modernize farming practices and promote agribusiness.
The state government believes that with proper utilization, the machinery and the trained manpower will not only boost local food production but also create jobs and stimulate economic activities in rural communities.
