Masdar Unveils 24/7 Gigascale Renewable Energy Project in Abu Dhabi
By Abbas Nazil
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s trailblazer in clean energy innovation, has announced key partnerships for the world’s first 24/7 gigascale renewable energy project.
The ambitious venture, unveiled during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), will integrate solar photovoltaic (PV) power with advanced battery storage systems to deliver uninterrupted renewable energy.
This milestone underscores the UAE’s leadership in sustainability and marks a pivotal advancement in addressing renewable energy intermittency.
Global leaders in PV module manufacturing, JA Solar and Jinko Solar, have been selected as preferred suppliers for the project.
Both will provide cutting-edge TopCon technology PV modules, contributing a combined capacity of 5.2 gigawatts (GW).
In addition, CATL, the world’s largest battery producer, has been entrusted to supply its advanced TENER battery technology for a massive 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).
These components form the backbone of the project, enabling stable and efficient energy delivery over a 30-year lifespan.
Masdar has also named Larsen & Toubro and Powerchina as preferred engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors.
The Letters of Award were officially signed at a ceremony held at the Masdar Pavilion during ADSW, with Masdar Chief Operating Officer Abdulaziz Alobaidli and senior representatives from the contractors in attendance.
Once operational, the project will deliver up to 1GW of renewable baseload power through its innovative integration of solar PV and battery storage.
The system is designed to ensure grid stability and reliability, positioning it as the largest solar PV and BESS installation globally.
It marks a major step forward in clean energy innovation, aligning with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and commitments made at COP28.
Abdulaziz Alobaidli described the initiative as a transformative leap in renewable energy technology, emphasizing its potential to set a global benchmark.
“By collaborating with world-class suppliers and contractors, we aim to demonstrate that uninterrupted renewable energy delivery is achievable on a large scale,” he stated.
Masdar has been a global leader in renewable energy since its establishment in 2006, spearheading projects across over 40 countries.
This groundbreaking initiative is part of its strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW and emerge as a major producer of green hydrogen by 2030.
As the UAE continues to lead in clean energy transformation, the project represents a significant milestone in sustainable innovation and the global energy transition.
