Maiduguri, suburbs face water rationing after devastating floods

The Borno State Government through the State Ministry of Water Resources has announced plans to start rationing water for 48 hours interval in some parts of metropolitan Maiduguri and its suburbs, to enable proper repairs of broken down of the city’s water network.
The city’s water network and its environs were heavily disrupted during the recent flooding of the state capital as a result of a breach at Alau dam.
In a statement released by the ministry, the measure aims to boost the continuation of routine maintenance and repairs of the broken down water network in the affected area.
The statement signed by the Commissioner for the State Ministry of Water Resources, Tijani Goni, the ministry decided to inform the general public that as a result of the flooding that affected Maiduguri metropolis and its sururbs, there is a need for continuation of its routine maintenance and repairs of broken water facilities.
” The engineers of the ministry are currently carrying out repairs and maintenance work on faualty facilities, and the pumping of water will be temporarily rationed for two-day intervals in some areas, pending permanent repairs and maitenance work on the waterfacilities,” part of the statement reads.
The commissioner expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation and understanding as the government works assiduously to fully restore norml water supply in the city.
On 9th September, heavy rain and structural damge caused the Alau dam in Konduga Locl Government Area of Borno State to collapse. The dam collapse caused flash flooding in neighbouring Maiduguri, the state capital, in Jere Local Government rea.
By September 10th, the following day, the flood submerged the city and destroyed private and public facilities. The flood trapped an unspecified number of people in their homes, on trees, and in other unsafe inaccessible locations.
