Maiduguri dry port will soon commence operation – Gov Zulum

By George George Idowu

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has announced that the Maiduguri inland dry port is slated to begin operations within the next six months.

Prof Zulum shared this update on Wednesday during a press briefing in Lagos following a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Pius Akutah

He emphasized the significant economic benefits the dry port will bring to Borno State, including job creation and enhanced trans-border trade with neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

He expressed optimism that the port would help diversify Nigeria’s economy, reducing its reliance on oil.

In his words: “Establishing the inland dry port in Maiduguri will create employment opportunities, taking thousands of young people off the streets. It will also strengthen our economic ties with neighbouring countries and boost the nation’s GDP.”

The governor highlighted ongoing efforts by the federal government to rehabilitate rail lines and improve road infrastructure under President Tinubu’s initiatives, which will further facilitate the port’s operations.

In the same vein, Akutah, echoed the governor sentiments, noting that the Maiduguri dry port will play a crucial role in trans-border trade, especially with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in effect.

He expressed confidence in Zulum’s commitment to the project, urging public and private stakeholders to collaborate and expedite its completion.

The port, a public-private partnership initiative, is expected to significantly enhance economic activities in the region once operational.
