Legislator Leads Imo Waste Management Reform Bill

The Majority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, Kanayo Onyemaechi, has sponsored a bill aimed at transforming the state’s waste management system.
The bill, which was passed unanimously on Wednesday, seeks to repeal the existing Imo Waste Management Act and establish the Eastern Waste Management Incorporated through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
This new initiative is to tackle the state’s ongoing waste disposal challenges and improve sanitation across Imo State.
In his presentation, Onyemaechi emphasized the urgent need for a reliable and efficient waste management system, pointing to the ongoing problem of indiscriminate garbage dumping in many parts of the state.
He explained that the PPP arrangement would not only address these sanitation issues, especially during the rainy season, but would also create employment opportunities through the establishment of jobs in equipment operation and recycling activities.
Supporting the bill, several lawmakers, including Innocent Ikpamezie, Okechukwu Udeze, and James Esile, commended Governor Hope Uzodimma’s initiative, expressing their optimism that the new system would help position Imo State as one of the cleanest in Nigeria.
They also emphasized the potential benefits, such as generating revenue through recycling and reducing the risks of disease outbreaks linked to poor sanitation.
The bill went through thorough scrutiny during a session of the Committee of the Whole House, chaired by Speaker Chike Olemgbe, before receiving unanimous approval.
The Clerk of the House, Chinelo Emeghara, was subsequently tasked with forwarding a clean copy of the bill to the governor for his assent.
