The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is taking proactive steps to educate and engage the younger generation in effective waste management practices.
LAWMA Academy recently organized a four-week summer school, catering to children aged 8 to 12.
The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the importance of instilling the culture of proper waste management in the young minds.
The program, which commenced on July 31, 2023, at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, aims to educate the children while providing them with a fun-filled experience.
The curriculum of the summer school encompasses various aspects of waste management, including arts and crafts, upcycling, and exposure to indoor and outdoor sports, as well as field trips. The well-designed program includes seasoned facilitators who foster a conducive learning environment for the students.

“The Summer School program is designed to create awareness among children about waste management and environmental sanitation, cultivating them as ambassadors for a cleaner and healthier environment,” Dr. Gbadegesin expressed.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to take advantage of the extended school holiday to enroll their children in the summer school. For those unable to participate physically, the academy provides an online option, ensuring accessibility for all interested learners.
The Academy’s team lead, Mrs. Elizabeth Ademola, emphasized that this was the third edition of the program, specially tailored to simplify the concept of waste and environmental management for children. Each child gains comprehensive knowledge of environmental sustainability practices during the course.
Since its inception, hundreds of pupils in the state have benefited from LAWMA Academy’s summer school, equipping them with essential waste management and environmental knowledge.
By educating the younger generation, LAWMA aims to create conscientious environmental activists who actively contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
